BC Beekeeping Instructors Preparation

This prerequisite theory course builds a deep understanding of honey bee biology, behaviour, and ecological importance, along with the core principles of beekeeping, including hive management and equipment use. You’ll also gain essential knowledge in bee health, studying common pests, diseases, and effective treatment strategies.

You’ll learn how to create engaging lessons, adapt complex concepts for beginners, and foster safe, inspiring learning environments—whether teaching at your apiary, in community settings, or in the classroom.

Course Outcomes

  • Design clear, engaging lessons using proven teaching strategies.

  • Develop and customize curriculum with ready-to-use Integrated Resource Packages.

  • Deliver impactful presentations and hands-on demonstrations with confidence.

  • Create an inclusive, safe, and inspiring environment for all learners.

Prerequisites:

  • Current BCHPA membership.

  • Completed BC Beekeeping Instructors Preparation with 70%+ on the exam (or an approved alternative course).

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience and currently operation of 10+ hives.

  • Preference for those active in the industry through workshops, club leadership, or published articles.

Format: In-person only, led by an experienced Apiarist.

Assessment: Written exam.

Pass On Your Beekeeping Legacy


You’ve mastered the art and science of beekeeping—now it’s time to inspire others. This course is for experienced beekeepers ready to step into the role of mentor and educator, even if you’ve never taught before. You’ll learn how to turn years of hands-on knowledge into clear, engaging lessons that spark curiosity and confidence in new beekeepers. From breaking down complex concepts to leading safe, hands-on demonstrations, you’ll gain the skills to teach effectively and inclusively. Topics include adult learning principles, beekeeping curriculum design, risk management, and communication strategies for diverse audiences.

The money goes directly to the BC Honey Producers’ Association and Technology Transfer Program for investment in further courses and programs to support honey producers in BC.

  • The course 1, BC Beekeeping Instructors Preparation is self-paced. Based on our estimations, dedicating 2-3 hours per week typically leads to completion within four months. However, students have 12 months from the date of enrolment to complete the curriculum. Course 2, Beekeeping Educator Training is held in-person over 1 full day.   • No prerequisites or prior education is required for the BC Beekeeping Instructors Preparation.

    Prerequisites for the Beekeeping Educator Training Include:

    • Individuals are required to be current members of the BCHPA

    • Completed the Advanced Beekeeping Foundations course with a minimum 70% grade on the exam or alternative approved course.

    • Have a minimum experience of 5 years beekeeping with an operation of 20 or more hives.

    • Preference will be given to people who are engaged in the industry through community outreach such as helping with bee club workshops, local club executive positions, published articles in the BeesCene or other related publications.
